Cohunu Koala Park

The Cohunu Koala colony was established in 1982 with the arrival of 4 koalas from South Australia. The colony now has more than 25 koalas and has an increase of about 4 baby joeys a year. The koala's diet consists mostly of eucalyptus leaves which have poor nutritional value. Koalas sleep 18 to 20 hours a day to conserve energy. They rarely drink water and rely on the water of the eucalyptus leaves.

Dave had an opportunity to hold a Koala. He said their fur felt similar to the wool on a sheep. He wore the vest to protect him from the koala's sharp claws.

Even though the koalas were lethargic, each one seemed to have its own personality. Dave said they reminded him of his younger days...the morning after the night before😃😃😃.

The park also is home to other animals such as emus, kangaroos, deer, goats and numerous birds We had bags filled with popcorn so the emus kept following us. Luckily their beaks are dull and they have no teeth LOL.

It was a very hot day and most of the kangaroos were partially buried in the sand under the trees. They had no visible energy except for one little fellow who took Dave up on his offer of popcorn.

A momma peacock and her baby were a bit more enthusiastic about the popcorn.

One of the most interesting creatures we saw was an echidna. We learned that the echidna is a spiny anteater. The four species of echidnas and the platypus are the only living mammals that lay eggs.

We ended our day at the park with the pelicans and black swans and ducks.
